As buying a (fancy) necktie is not for everybody a regular event, it might be useful to define a few things. As silk designer ties come in all quality and pretty much one shape, let's make some straight forward definitions.
If you are planning to spend less than $50 on a necktie, it is not not going to be suburb quality. A descent quality tie cost currently roughly $100-$300 in US department and speciality stores.

Italy has been the larger manufacturer of quality designer ties for decades, most ties are made by hand. Many famous designer brands trust the handful silk factories to produce their brand name ties. France produces some lovely bespoke brands like Hermes and Charvet, and in England we find consistent quality from Turnbull and Asser.
