Which sevenfold tie is the best? To start, most sevenfold ties are made by artisan tailors (as the tie is more complex to hand cut, fold, stitch to perfection than a regular cut tie) and high-end brands only, already giving it a huge step up from the regular 3-4 fold tie.
I would say, generally speaking, most sevenfold tie form the Napoli area ion Italy are good, very good or excellent. There is still a proud way way of producing the best and stay true to heritage and Neapolitan tailoring tradition. Great choices for a Neapolitan sevenfold tie: Sartorio Napoli, Kiton, Attolini, Marinella, Finamore and Barba.
The Barba sevenfold ties run slightly slimmer at 3"/ 7.5cm width, Sartorio runs 7cm and 8cm width, Kiton runs at 3.15"/8cm and 3.3"/ 8.5cm width. Marinella sevenfold ties are available in regular and wide width.
Long term customers of theses Neapolitans brand appreciate the traditional tailoring, the brand exclusivity and their story (often generations of high-end dress shirts, suit and necktie production).
The are very limited amount of excellent sevenfold ties being produced somewhere else (not in Napoli, Italy). In California, Robert Talbott made an excellent unlined sevenfold tie (the high-end of their men collection) in the early 2000's. After roughly a decade, the company (after some owner change?) started to produce the sevenfold tie again, currently made in Italy. I am likely to assume that the international investment company owning the brand does not understand sartorial tailoring and the real reason people become (or stay) Robert Talbott customers. Not having any clear company information (explaining why I would buy a $295 necktie from this brand) on their web site says enough.
Brand like Ermenegildo Zegna, Canali and Ferragamo have produced for one collection the sevenfold tie, in the last few years. However it does not seem a standard part of the line up. The Ermenegildo Zegna sevenfold tie was strangely name "5pieghe " ( 5 fold). The Zegna brand has been exploring necktie niches with their quindici (15 colors), Trecapi and 100 Fili collections. Salvatore Ferragamo is really known for their "perfect" novelty print designs, cute mini dogs, elephants or fish designs on twill silk. The last few years (after years with less success) their other designs seem to get more popular. The Ferragamo Gancini designs, square end knitted ties, solid and geometric ties have been pretty popular the last few years.
